Access Jet Database Engine

The Microsoft Access Joint Engine Technology (JET) Engine is a database engine on which various Microsoft applications are built. Database engine is a basic element of MS Access database, which stores the data in a systematic manner. JET database engine uses queries to retrieve data from the database.

Access JET allows many users to execute the Access database simultaneously. JET uses "data write locking policy" to stop the data from being damaged or corrupted when multiple users are trying to make changes in a single Access database. According to "data write locking policy", the user could modify only those database records on which they have applied a lock. This lock gave the user to exclusively access to the database record until the lock was released.

JET provides both referential and entity integrity in MS Access database. Entity integrity ensures that the field which identifies the primary key record is not null. It also ensures that no record gets duplicated. Referential integrity ensures that the foreign key should contain a value that corresponds with an existing primary key in Access database. If a foreign key contains a value that is different from the corresponding primary key values in the referenced table, then the data between tables becomes desynchronized and the referential integrity is broken.

JET also supports certain rules, which apply to the columns in the tables. These rules enforce what information is to be entered into the columns. For example, a rule might be applied that allows the user to only save positive values into a numeric field. Any negative value entered into that field will show an error message.

JET database can not be accessed by every user; however, it is done as per the user's level. The information about the user is kept in a separate system database and all the privileges provided to the user are saved in system database. In Jet 4 database engine, database administrators were allowed to set the security of the database by using SQL commands such as, DROP GROUP, CREATE, ADD, DROP USER and ALTER.

JET database engine can be corrupted due to operating system failure, network failure, interruption of input/output operations and more. In such cases, you might encounter error messages like "The Microsoft Jet Database Engine cannot open the file." After the occurrence of this message, the files become inaccessible. To successfully recover the files, the user needs to use Access Recovery software.
